THE BOKOUGH AND MR SEDDON'S COMPENSATION CLAIM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Ifc seems to me that the issue placed before the poll on Friday, is hardly what was intended by the meeting of the 6th inst. viz., I vote FOR or I vote AG-AINbT the purchase, &o. It was hardly a matter of the expedience or otherwise of the puvchase but the manner in which it was conducted, and I think that if the Council had felt inclined to deal fairly by the public they had it in their power (viz., the action of certain Councillors at the first meeting after the purchase had been completed) to open up the whole question and commence da. novo, as a little light had been let in upon the subject, and there is no doubt but that the purchase was conducted in a hurried and unbusiness like manner. Seddon claims compensation for lot 60 and 61, in the latter of which he has no interest whatever, it being neither freehold or leasehold, though some of the purchase committee were undonbtedly under the impression that they were buying lot 61, and were completely taken a back when they found that Crs. Vialon and Price had concluded the bargain for 60 only. That Cr. Vialou knew more than he liked to tell and more than the other councillors connected with him in the matter is evident from his replies to questions put to him on lot 61, "what have I to do with lot 61," "I lraow nothing about Seddon 's claim," and such like evasive answers. "Why was not a copy of Seddon' a Mortgage deed recorded that the Burgesses might see for themselves that they were getting all upon which the money was lent, as a good many of us think we are not. I repeat, I think the issue before the burgesses is a false one, as it gives the Council no option in the event of the vote being, as no doubt it will be, against the purchase but to .come before the ratepayers again and ask their advice as tho matter must be arranged, as between Mr Seddon and the ratepayers. I hope Seddon next time will only claim compensation on his own and not on fictitious property. — I am. &c, Civis.
