ALEXANDRA.
Concert. This concert given here on Friday last by the Harapepe Minstrels was a great success, the Publio Hall being well filled. The proceeds are to be devoted to the pui chase of au harmonium, for the wse of that settlement. On two previous occasions concerts had been advertised to be held at Harapepa School-house, but had to be postponed in consequence of inclement weather. Mr Frank McMinn, however, who has worked most energetically in the matter, determined, in spite of these failures, to try once more in Alexandra, and on this occasion was, as I have said, rewarded with a full house. The performance itself was unanimously considered to exceed in merit any of the same description hitherto held here. Not being furnished with a programme lam unable to individualize all the performers, but amongst the most noticable were "Mr Johnson" (Mantelow), the corner men, Mr F. McMinn, and another, Messrs. Bolton, Stewart, and Baylies. ongs were all enthusiastically received by a sympathetic audience. The usual dance terminated a most pleasant evening's entertainment. A small menagerie has been on exhibition here this last week past, but has not, I fancy, met with much support. A native died here last week, who had been brought down for medical attendance by his friends to Mr Aubin, whose patient he has been on a previous occasion. As he was without means, and no Government officer here to give an order for the necessaries he required he gradually grew worse. After staying a fortnight he died as he was being carried down to the canoe.
Tawhaio's New Road. Tawhiao's new road from Kawhia to his Hikurangi settlement is through today. There has been a deal of labor expended on it. Although food is far from plentiful among them, a feast is going on to commemorate the event of the opening. A great soreness exists amongst the Ngatimanapoto's, who left their pigs behind them at Te Kuiti when they left for Hikurangi, as Te Kooti lias been making very free with them in their absence, and several of the owners are threatening vengeance against him.
The New Mail Service. Our mails, under the new arrangement, arrive here too late to be received and answered by next mail, except only those residing in the township. The "Knickerbocker Line" has the new contract to Te Awamutu, and the proprietor, Mr MoGuire, still retains its reputation for punctuality and attention, — [Own Cobrespondent.] July 13th 1880.
How sublimely indifferent to the sweet remarks of his beloved feminine companion is the man whose collar has become unbuttoned at the back of his neck, and who tries to rebutton it as he walks Along.
