Notice.
TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF HAMILTON.
f^i ENTLEMEN,— The present Council yJT took over a heavy overdraft at the Bank, less in amount now than when a majority of them took office ; and, besides, a threatened lawsuit, at the instance of Mr Seddon, for damage done to his property by the acts of their predecessors. The Council, as your representatives, dealt with the latter in a manner which they considered the only and most economical way out of the difficulty, and showed no disposition to shirk their responsibilities. A section of the Ratepayers, however, having shown by their vote on Tuesday last that they think the Council was wrong in the course they followed, Councillors have decided, in the face of that vote and not deeming the meeting referred to as a fairly representative one on so important an issue, to call a Poll of the whole of the Ratepayers on a matter committing them to an expensive lawsuit, and so involving them, in the present depressed condition of the Borough finances, to a possible serious monetary loss. If the Council adopted the sense of the meeting referred to on the 6th instant, carried by a show of hands only, the bridge approach contract on the west side now going on must be suspended until the relations of the Borough with Mr Seddon have been settled by litigation, and there is danger in the interim of the said approach collapsing and traffic over the bridge being stopped altogether. B. C. BEALE, Mayor. Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton, 9th July, 1880.
