THE BO ROUGH PRINTING. Public Meeting.
A public MEETIXO of the burgesses of Hamiltonwas held at the Council Chambers lastbftight, in pursuance of a notification signed by the Mayor, for the purpose of considering the selection of a medium for the Borough advertising. At the appointed hour there were about a dozen bavgesses present, and on the motion of Mr W. Jones, Mr John Knox took the chair. The Chairman read the advertisement calling the meeting, and Mr McGarrigle moved — That in the opinion of this meeting (convened for the purpose of \entilating the question at issue), taking all the surrounding circumstances into consideration, it is undesirable and unjudicious to remove the printing and advertising of the Corporation from the local paper. Mr Jones seconded the motion, but recommended the following addition : " and vre recommend the Council to accept the tender of the Waikalo Times." He wished to state that his position in this matter was not well understood. In the Council he moved the resolution to ask for terms, but he did so at the instigation of Cr. Peat ; but when the motion came on, to his surprise, Cr. Peat opposed him. He waß very glad of the issue, seeing that public opinios was so strongly in favor of the local paper having the advertising. The alteration t© the motion was agreed to and it was then put and carried unanimously. Mr J.K. McDonald said before the meeting closed he would like to say that it was rather out of place for a few burgesses to meet and go over a matter settled at a large meeting the night before. The Mayor had called the meeting and should have been present. The Mayor here entered the room, and said he had been detained. He then laid on the table a telegram which he had received from Mr Brett on the 30th ult., stating that as the Star's tender had not been accepted it was withdrawn. Mr McDonald said after the receipt of that telegram the advertisement calling the present meeting should have been withdrawn. It was another attempt to burke a matter of importance. The Mayor said he could not produce the telegram till ljhat meeting, because it might have been decided to give the contract to the Herald. Ha stated* that he had not Been the letter from the Star read by the Clerk at the pievious night's meeting. After a vote of thanks to the chair the meeting terminated.
