THOSE ROADS AGAIN.
TO THE EDITOR. ■ Sir, — If the ratepayers of the Newcastle Highway District would like a little recreation in the mud-larking line, they should take a trip from Ngaruawahia to Whatawhata, and they will be satisfied to their hearts' content. If not, they must have big hearts. The roads are positively dreadful, and it does seem to me an utter waste of money to throw down ton aiter ton of I iff lit sand on the top of mere slush caused by traffic over the newly ploughed ground. I suppose I ought not to growl as the Engineer seems to approve of it ; but I must growl, as I am positive the roads will be all but impassable before the winter is over, and then what shall we do ? Give up drays and take to sledges I think would be the best thing. And then poor Whatawhata ! I pity the dwellers therein. Their beau* tiful grass flat completely destroyed by such an abortion called a road. The like of it ne'er before was aeon. But I suppose the money must be spent before the present Board go out, and therefore we must grin and bear it. — I am, &c, Wish- Wash. Fgaru.awa.hja, J u ty Oth, 1880.
