The House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr Hutchinson gave notice that he would introduce a Bill to restrict Chinese immigration. REPLIES TO QUESTIONS. Replying to questions, it was stated that the rent paid for the Government House, Hokitika, was £50 per annum. Rent was charged to the Treasury, and not to the county, A sum of £354 had been advanced upon the Motahau and Orange Blocks, at Waipa, East Coast, but it was refunded, and proclamation been removed. The land was in the occupation of Captain Porter, and was not acquired by the land agent. The answer made to a question yesterday was made in error. The Government did not see its way clear to alter the provision in the Licensing Bill of abolishing bottle licenses. The Waimate Plains were being surveyed, and would be opened before long for sale. The Government would not pay rates to the local bodies on land situated above the snow line. The recommendations of Royal Commissions to offer Civil Service appointments as prizes, to be competed for by students of the New Zealand Universities, was being considered, but had not yet taken a practical step. All the surplus Land Fund of Otago and Canterbury had been paid over in accordance with the Financial Arrangements Act. The Government could not say whether they would support any measure for equalization of taxations for local purposes upon gold miners and property until they saw the measure. The no-confidence debate was resumed by Mr Maclean, who spoke in favor of the Government, and continued by Mr Seddon in opposition to the financial policy. It was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment.
