THE LATE FIRE AT PUKETE.
We are enabled to give some further particulars regarding the destruction by fire of Mr Washer's house near Ngaruawahia. Mr Washer says he was aroused about two o'clock on Friday morning by hearing the crackling sound of the fire, and the dog barking. He immediately got up, and discovered that the house was on fire. He awoke his wife, and together they got the children out of their room, which opened out of the kitchen. At that time the back wall of the kitchen was ablaze. He then tried to get some of the things out of the children's room, but the fire had gained so rapidly that he was unsuccessful. He broke open one of the front windows, and managed to get out a box, a small chest of drawers, and some blankets and wearing apparel. Everything else was consumed. Mr Washer is unable to say how the fire originated. He was the last to go to bed about eleven o'clock on Thursday night, and left some fire in the grate with some clothes on a chair in front. The house, which was of six rooms, was insured for £75, and the furniture for a like sum, both in the New Zealand office.
