LAST NIGHT'S SITTING. 11.10 p.m.
Mr Thompson resumed the no-confi-dence debate. He thought that the whole people of the colony were responsible for the present condition of affairs, and advocated rigid retrenchment and opposed Government proposals. Mr Turnbull considered the present condition of affairs as a natural outcome of a long series of misgovernment, fostered by the Provincial system, and magnified by the shameless scrambling for borrowed. money. If they had a bold Government which would resist pressure the Opposition would support all honest attempts at retrenchment. The money being spent, they were all now exceedingly virtuous ; if retrenchment would not suffice, then further taxation must be submitted to. [Mr Turnbull is still speaking.]
