THE WAIMATE PLAINS. The Native Minister at the Front. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

The following appeared in an Extra published yesterday morning from this office :—: —

Wellington, Sunday Night. The Hon. $lr. Bryce left this afternoon for Opunake, en route for the front. It appears that within two miles of Parihaka the natives put up a fence, which was palled down by the Armed Constabulary, and was again erected by the natives. A Cabinet Council, was held to-day, at which it was decided that it would be better for the Hon. Mr Bryce to go up at once. Opinions here are divided as to whether it means a rupture. My own idea is that nothing will come of it, but I may be wrong. There is no doubt, however, that the situation is "critical.
