MYSTERIOUS OCCURRENCE.
A few evenings ago the stable adjoining" the house of one of our best known and respected townsmen was the scene of an occurrence which up to the present lias baffled all enquiry. It would appear that on the evening in question the boy einj;lo3 r ed in the stable, and who sleeps in the loft had occasion to go to the building with another lad when he was .startled by hearing a noise as if some one upstairs was engaged in throwing all the movables about. Kunning to the house lie told the servant girl about the affair and the accompanied him back. On reaching the stable the girl at once ascended the ladder to ascertain the origin 01 the disturbance, but on gaining the top a bridle whizzed past her head, propelled by some unseen hand. It is not surprising to bo told that she screamed, or that she made all speed to regain the house, the courageous youths who summoned her having preceded her with the &peed of lightning, The girl, boldly ascribing the demonstration to the agency of ghosts, at once informed her master of the circumstance, and he, accompanied by another gentleman who happened to be in the house, also went on a visit of inspection to the stable, (letting up into the loft, which is divided by a seven foot partition, they found everything in "most admired disorder." The harness, saddles, bridles, and other articles were scattered in all directions. The boy's bed ; had bepn turned inside out, and the bed clothes thrown across the room, while a large quantity of oats had been picturesquely sprinkled over everythiuu;. Nothing appeared to have been stolen, find, although diligent search was made, nobody was discovered on the premises. The two gentlemen, although they did not share in the servant's belie 1 * that .some spiritual visitor of unquiet habits wa.s at the bottom of the att.iir, were novrrthc-le-s puzzled to account for it, as the time which elapsed after the girl ha I left and before they were on the -pot was on y barely sufficient for nuvone to h ive madt good his escape. There can bo no d-mb that this is .mother "larrikin tivc.'c," an it is much to b" regretted that the part concerned was not caiiifht m the act. A free application of the horsewhip would have a most excellent effect in such a case.
