The Scottish Language. — The Scottish language is no more a dialect of the English than the English is a dialect of the Scottish ; but they are both dialects of the same ancestral tongue. Doric Greek was not a dialect ot lonic, but both were dialects of the Old Greek language, each having well-marked peculiarities of its own, although these peculiarities were not so great as to render them mutually unintelligible, and thus to constitute them distinct languages. The same may be said, and with equal truth, of the Scottish and English dialects. As languages they are identical, but as dialects they are distinct and independent of each other.
