The following letter was received by Mr Fantham last month, and has been handed to us for publication :—: — Ruapuke, Raglan, 23rd April, 1880. A. A. Fantham, Esq. Sir,— At a public meeting held in the Council Chambers, Raglan, on the 16th instant, to consider what steps might be taken to prevent the introduction of pleuro-pncumonia into this district, the following motion was unanimously carried, and I was requested to send }ou a copy of it :— Resolved— "That the thanks of the residents in Waikato are due to Mr A. A. Fantham for the manly and straightforward stand he has made in trying to expose and stamo out the pleuro-pncu-monia in the Waikato district." — I have the honor to be, sir, yours respectfully, W. Duncan, Chairman Raglan County Council.
The following appears in Saturday's Herald: — "A meeting of farmers, dairymen, and others interested in the stamping out of the cattle disease (pleuropneumonia) was held at the British Hotel yesterday, to take steps for presenting Mr A. A. Fantham, a member of the South Auckland Cattle Board, with a testimonial, in recognition of his strenuous action in connection with pleuro-pneu-monia. Amongst those present were Messrs F. Lawry, Lennard, Carew, Claude, J. Bainbridge, J. W. Robinson, F. Andrews, T. Brown, A. Thompson, Udy, A. Harris, A. Allan, and others. On the motion of Mr, Bainbridge, Mr Lawry was appointed secretary. The
Secretary explained the object of the meeting. It was proposed to get up a testimonial to Mr Fantham, the subscription to be limited to Is from each, so that all might have an opportunity of subscribing. The idea was to appoint a committee from this meeting. The following committee was proposed : — Messrs A. Harris (Tbmaki), Rhodes (Remuera), R. Porch (Mount Eden), R. Udy (Mount Eden), F. Lawry (Epsom), James R. Walters, T. Allen, J. Bainbridge, Andrews, and Hastie. Mr Lawry said that he thought Mr Fantham was entitled to a testimonial for the manly, straightforward manner in which he had acted in regard to the pleuro-pneumonia disease. Mr Thompson thought that the subscription should be ss. The Chairman thought the people should be allowed to contribute as they thought pi'oper. Mr Udy proposed that the subsctiptions be limited to Is. He believed Mr Fautham would be better pleased at receiving a general testimonial of this sort. The motion was seconded by Mr Allen, and carried. The committee proposed was elected, with power to add to their number. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
