THE CATTLE RESTRICTIONS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — I enclose herewith a copy of a letter addressed to the Chairman of the South Auckland Cattle Board ; I shall feel obliged by your publishing this letter iv the first issue of the Times, as by so doing the announcement made through the medium of your advertising columns, in reference to the depasturing of cattle within the limits of the township will be partly explained. In further explanation of the resolution passed I may state that the Board has received a letter from the Under-Secretary for Ciw\ n Lands stating that, upon the recommendation of the Hon. Mr Whitaker, it has been, resolved to vest the town belt on both sides of the river in a Domain Board, consisting of three members of the existing Town Board and two members of the Pukekura Highway District Board. As soon as the Domain Board is appointed and the town belt handed over to them, it is anticipated that the large area of which the town belt consists will be surveyed into allotments of a convenient size and leased by public auction, so that cattle-owners and dairymen may have an opportunity of obtaining sufficient land for grazing purposes at a low rental and in a convenient position. The Board is quite aware that the decision to which its members have come is open to reversal by the incoming Board, but the present decision has been arrived at with the view of placing the matte: 1 in a definite form before the ratepayers, and as showing in the strongest manner the opinion of the Board as at present constituted on the subject. It is thought that, with the lengthened notice given and the opportunities that we anticipate will shortly exist in the way of securing paddocks, no inconvenience will be caused to any cattle-owners, and the costly and substantial improvements which are now being made within the township Avill not run the risk of being injured or destroyed by the cattle depasturing within its limits. — I am, &c, J. Palmer Campbell, Chairman C.N.D.T.B. Town Board Office, Cambridge, 14th May, 1880.
Town Hoard Office, Cambridge, 14th May, 1880. To the Chairman of the South Auckland Cattle Bo.ud. It is proposed by the Boaid to prevent cattlo-ovvneis fiom depasturing cattle within the limits of the township after the list October ne\t ; but the Uoaid is of opinion th it some months should cl.ipsc between the cinnouni 1 ment ot stall ,m oidei and its taking efiVi t. so th.it < attle-owneii. and Jain men may have sufii< lent time to make othei arrangements. — 1 ha\ c, &c ., J.
