R.M. COURT, CAMBRIDGE,
Yk.sterday.— (Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq., R M., and R. H. D. Fergussou, Esq., J.P.)
Assault with Violence. James Corcoran was charged with having on the 3rd May unlawfully wounded one Henry No. grove by striking him on the head with a spirit flask. Mr James Russell appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Beale conducted the defence. The evidence of the plaintiff, who is a butcher carrying on business in Victoriastreet, Cambridge, was in effect that on the evening in question he was engaged with his partner (Mr McCann), making up his accounts, when the defendant came in and commenced to make remarks on the different items of account as they were read out. Becoming at length very disagreeable, plaintiff iold him to leave, which he refused te do. Plaintiff then put him outside, and on turning to go in was struck on the head with a small spirit flask, which inflicted a deep wound. With the help of his partner he bathed the wound and afterwards went to Dr. Wadflington, who attended to him. He put the matter in the hands of the police. The evidence of Mr McCann was of a corroborative nature. Mr Beale said he was prepared to enter a plea of guilty to a common assault, but would like to call the defendant himself in mitigation of the penalty. James Cocoran was then examined^ under the Further Evidence Act, and** deposed that he was aggravated to commit the asault hj the plaintiff, whu struck him first. The Bench decided to deal with the matter summarily, and sentenced the prisoner to one mouths' imprisonment with hard labor.
