England and her Colonies. London, May 4.
The Pull Mall Gazette is under the impression that late wars have eradicated the opinion that England is careless of the connection of her colonies, and that now all are unanimously appreciating the fact that during the recent depression the Colonial trade compensated England for the losses incurred elsewhere. The question of Imperial and Colonial defence should now be settled, and it Avould be a triumph to the Liberals to acomplish this. The Gazette believes that the recent application to the Home Govemmet for advice in Colonial affairs, indicates the old jealousy of the Colonial Office, and thinks that now is a favourable time, when discussing commercial treaties with foreign powers to impress upon colonies favouring protection the advantage of understanding the subject of the tariff. A. requisition has been presented to Sir Cbas. Gavan Duffy (lately speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria) asking him to stand for Meath. Sir Garnet Wolseley will shortly proceed to India to succeed General Sir Frederick P. Haines.
