HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Chambers, Vic-toria-street, on Tuesday. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Davies, Jones, Peat, Pearce, Mullions, McGarrigle, Vialou, and White. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Reports from the various committees were read and received. The Works Committee reported that at a meeting, held on the 23rd April, the following resolutions were carried : —
r. Re Hcaphy-tcrracc. — Resolved— That the part of the road formed be gravelled 12 feet wide and 6 inches deep in the centre, the footpath to be gravelled under the supervision of the Chairman. 2. Re Thomas's Contract at Hcaphy-terrace. — Resolved — To recommend the Council not to pay any further sum to Mr Thom«is, he having exceeded the Engineer's instructions, and left the works in ;i state so unsatistactory as to require the expenditure of between £4 and £5 to remedy. 3. Rosohcd — To let the dwelling-house on lot 60 to Mis Mack, at a weekly rental of 4s; the foreman of works, to repair entrance. 4. Re Hunt and White's Application for Gravel. — Resohed to grant permission on certain conditions.,'*
The committee appointed to enquire into the request of Mr Sedclon to have a certain reserve (which is only surveyed) proclamed a public road, reported intimating the Council that in their opinion the Council had no power to deal with the question, and recommended that Mr Seddon be notified to that effect. The Works Committee reported that at a meeting held on the 30th inst. , it was unanimously resolved to retain the Services of the present bridge toll collector at the same wages, for the present month of May. It was also unanimously agreed fro have the present notice boards at the bridge painted over and relettered with a copy of No. 3 By-law. Tenders were opened for gravelling Clarencestreet, and that of Mr J. Devitt accepted at 9d per yarJ. It was resolved that the street be formed, the footpath to be included where required ; specifications to be drawn un by Cr. Vialou. The committee appointed to enquire into the matter of Seddon's drain reported, recommending the Council not to accede to the request to have the drain cleaned, as it was not under the jurisdiction of the Borough. On the motion of Or. Jones, seconded by Cr. Peat, it was resolved — ■ lh.it th.it portion of the "Works Committee's report re lhomas's extended claim on his contract at Heaphy rcrr.it c be adopted. On the motion of Cr. Jones, seconded by Cr. Vialou it was resolved to adopt the report of Committee re road near Seddon's, and on the motion of Cr Jones, it was alho resolved to adopt the recommendation not to deal with Mr Seddon's dram. It was resolved to hold a special meeting of the Council on the 11th inst, for the purpose of considering the question of making footpaths in Victoria-street. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that since last meeting no cases had come wnder his notice calling for attention. A telegram was read from tlie Treasury, intimating that the sum of -£205 10s had been placed to the credit of the Council at the Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton, on account of the stone protection to pieis of bridge. An application from Messrs Knox and Murless to have the furze on the cemetery road cleared was referred to the Furze Committee. Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., wrote stating that lie had spoken to Mr Blackett about painting and screwing up the Hamilton bridge, and he agreed with him that the (Tovernment should pay half the cost. He promised to attend to the matter next session. He also acjreetl with the views ot the Council on fie subject of the subsidies to local bodies, and would eithtr advocate their abolition or see that some substitute were provided for them. The Mayor of the Thames forwarded a draft of a proposed amendment to the Hospitals and C'h.iiri table Aid Bill, whioh was held over for consideration. It was resolved to call for tenders for painting and screwing up the bridge, the work to be carried out under the supervision of Crs. Price and Vialou. It was resolved to notify th.it the Council intend to strike a rate of Is in the £ for the ensuing year. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Jones — Tli.it the pounds on tho cast and west sides of tlu« ii\er be pioilaimed, and that Messrs Comubes and Land be appointed poundkeepcih. Cr. Peat moved, Cr. Davies seconded, and it was carried — That the drainage of Bridge-street Kast be relegated to the "Works Committee \\ithpoi\er to act. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the Council shortly afterwards rose.
