HAMILTON CONTINGENT.
Te Awamutu Cavalry. A special meeting of the members of the Contingent for the purpose of electing officers, was held at Gwynne's Hotel on Saturday evening last. About 25 members were present, and the chair was occupied by Sub. -Lieut. Johnbon. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, Messrs. W. Sandes and W, Cussens were duly sworn in as members. The chairman then explained the object of the meeting which had been called in accordance with orders received from the commanding officer for the district. Their first duty would be to elect a captain, and with the 'permission of the meeting he had great pleasure in proposing Leiut. Whitaker for the post. The members of the troop, he was assured, fully recognised his fitness for the position. The whole of the Cavalry were indebted to him in many ways, but chiefly for being the means of providing for them a substantial increase of pay since they were first enrolled. He was quite sure they would never find a better officer for looking after the interests of the men who had the honour to serve under him. The motion was seconded by Trooper W. H. Kelly and carried by acclamation. Sergt. Hunt then proposed Sub. -Lieut Johnson as Lieuh vice Lieut. F. A. Whitaker, and in doing so referred to the services rendered to the troop by that officer. The motion was seconded by Trooper Henry and also carried by acclamation. For the post of Sub. -Lieut., vice Sub. • Lieut. Johnson, there were two candidates, viz:— Sergt. -Major Seddon, proposed by Trooper Kelly and seconded by Sergt. Hunb, and Sergt. Hunt, proposed by Trooper Ellison and seconded by Trooper Hinton. The ballot resulted as follows : — Sergt Hunt 12; Sergt. Major Seddon 9. The former was therefore declared duly elected. Corporal J. Wood was elected sergeant unopposed ; Trooper Henry, who was also nominated, retiring in his favor. For the vacant post of orporal the following 1 were proposed: — Troopera AlcNicol, F immer, Homy and Pilling 1 , and on a ballot being taken Trooper Liinmer was elected This brought the business of the meeting to a close, and after the usual vote of thanks to the chair those pres nt separated.
