TUHIKARAMEA. (OWN CORRESPONDENT. )
A meetixg of ratepayers was held at Ngahinaponri School-room on Saturday, the 21th iustinf-, at 3 o'clock p.m., for the purpose of electing trustees and officers under the Highway* Act, for the district of Tuhikarainca as newly constituted. F. TV. Lang", Esq., in the chair. The Chairmau having read the notice in the Ga/ette fixing 1 time, date, and place of the first meeting. Mr Reid proposed Messrs. F. TV. Lang, F. Vickers, H. Hadßeld, R. N. Buttle, and TV. Aldersou, as Trustees. The motion was seconded by Mr Chas. Vickers, and carried unanimously. Mr James Davys, and Robt. Drabble were appointed fence viewers, and Messrs John blasson, and Walter Reid, Auditors At a subsequent meeting of the new Board, F. TV. .Lang Avas elected chairman.
School. Mr Hadfield took advantage of the meeting of residents to direct attention to the very unsatisfactory way in which our school now stood. The building was erected by public .subscription some three or four years since, on land given for the purpose by Mr C. Vickers. And at a g-eneral meefc'ng- of tho&e who stiboci ibetl the necessary funds, it was decided that a deed should be prepared vesting 1 the property in three trustees ; it was at the time clearly understood that the building was to be at the service of residents for all reasonable purposes. A deed was executed and duly registered, but through some misunderstanding various conditions were inserted which virtually nullified the transfer. A long discussion took place. One gentleman strongly recommended that it be vested in the Road Board, others were of opinion that that body could not in their capacity as a Road Board hold property for the purpose other than those pertaining to roads, ferries, &c. It was also suggested that the building be handed over to the Board of Education, provided that body would erect a teacher's residence. It was ultimately agreed, on the motion of Mr R-. N. Buttle, to leave the matter in the hands of the three trustees originally appointed by the subscribers to make necessary inquiries, and call a public meeting- at their discretion.
Cemetery. A piooe of land having been set aside by the Waste Lands Board as a cemetery, Messrs F. Vickors, W. Reid, and J. Grlason were nominated as trustees of same.
Heather's Creek Bridge Has been for some time paist in a very unsafe state, but our District Beard have not felt justified in spending any of their funds on it till more satisfactory arrangements were made with regard to the boundary line between this district and Mangapiko Highway District. I believe there is now every prospect of an amicable settlement of this question, Unless some* thing is dono before the heavy rains set in there will be great danger of the present struoture being entirely swept wway.
