THE MANGAHOWHIA BRIDGE.
TO TIIE EDITOR. Sic, — T observe in your i^sue of Thursday last that the loweHt tenderers are not quite satisfied with my reference to that work. Lest ' the public should be under any false impression in tihe matter I will, instead of making the amende honorable^ ho plain and state the facts. The public wevo aware, through your local columns, that teudfvs would hhoytly bo called for zvjMhs to the nbovo bruJgv ; bufc oi tho-iC wlia iulon^ed tn \ml \u s t-omehdM-a-dor.Qa t not quo was a'Adivflf uny toudei'R being u.)li d for ui.t>l ii v fy Krfl<JV, f of the \Vhat tt . n^ta Ilutd, iufyn«cl thy public that
hinrtfelf and Mr Scott had got the contract for £90 odd. Tfce matter was brought to my attention by several settlers, including one of our public representative^ and publicity of the whole n atter asked for. ,1 made all'the tljatlcoul^, with \he reeuU that McKSellovi e^d a notice, wbich not one of those interested saw anything 1 of, was ported up at liis hotel, and after the contract was let he informed enquirers that he was the successful tenderer. No -notice was posted up at the Post-uflice, nor did any appear in your columns. These are the facts, and if Messrs Kellow aud Scott object to them they have their remedy, . I cannot conclude this explanation without saying that the position of a correspondent is a rno^t unpleasant one ; either he, for fear of cauti-i«f offence, passes abuses without exposing them, and is in that case unworthy of the uame of correspondent, or H he attempts to &ec fair play he makes enemies of those who, under ordinary circumstances, mi#ht be useful fiiends. — I am, &c, WHATAWHATA CORRESPONDENT.
To THE EDITOR. .Sir. — As Jas. Pnntman has thought fit to act the part of an assassin, and stab me under a musk, I shall until &uch times as he shall h tve the manliness to attach his name to his insolent letter treatitwith the contempt w Inch it justly merits. — lam, &c, ' , - John- W. BRiDGdf an,
