Sir James Fergusson. London, March 20. Sir James Fergueson's appointment as Governor of Bombay is confirmed.

The Tay Disaster. In an investigation into the Tay Bridge disaster, evidence was submitted that one of the supporting columns high girders was cracked from top to bottom, and merely held together by four hoop-bands ; that many of the rivets were without heads, empty bolt holes, loosened bars, and nuts unscrewed. Some old moulders testified that defects in iron were filled with putty, and painted over.

Gladstone on Ireland. In opening the Midlothian campaign Gladstone said : " I will sweep out of their seats a great many men who now represent constituencies in Parliament, and consign them to that retirement for which they are more fitted." At Marylebone Gladstone, alluding to Iri&h affairs, said he had no friendship for Home Rule : the unity of the Empire and the authority of Parliament must be maintained, independent of every other consideration. The Common Council of London refused, by 72 to 45, a motion for an address of congratulation to the Czar on his escape from assassination. The Council of the Irish Home League has issued another manifesto to the electors of Ireland attacking- Earl Beaconsfield.
