THE BOROUGH COUNCIL AND MR SEDDON'S CLAIM.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — Can you inform myself and a number of other burgesses whether our sapient Council, in their purchase of Seddon's half-acre at such an absurdly high price, have not rendered themselves personally liable for the amount, or whether it does not come under the character of a loan for which they require to take a plebiscite before having power to deal with it ? It is an easy matter for" men to vote money which does not belong to them. I believe several members of the Council have just the uecessary property qualification entitling them to sit. One member, who makes himself particularly prominent, could not have occupied his seat if he had not got the valuer to rate him higher. Such being the case, it behoves the owners of property in the Borough to protect themselves from the action of men who, whether representing the intellect of the Borough or not, most certainly do not represent its property. I think a public meeting, at which the burgesses could give their views and ventilate their opinions, would have a very beneficial effect. — I am, ke, Pro Boxo Publico.
