THE OUTBREAK OF PLEUROPNEUMONIA.

On Thursday evening a meeting of the chief settlers in the Hamilton-Taupiri district was held at the residence of Messrs A. and H. Swarbrick, to consider what steps should be taken to protect the interests of stock-owners in reference to the outbreak of pleuro-pneumonia in the district. Mr A. Primrose having been voted to the 'chair, the following resolutions were passed unanimously :—: — 1. That this meeting pledges itself to assist the South Auckland Cattle Board, in stamping out pleuro-pneumonia from the district, to the utmost of its power. 2. That this meeting urges upon the Cattle Board the necessity of prompt and vigorous measures to at once stamp out the disease. 3. That the Cattle Hoard be requested to prohibit cattle from an> f.irm on which there is known to be infected cattle being driven upon a public road. 4. That to carry out these views Messrs A. Swarbrick, Primrose, and Thomas be appointed a committee with power to add to their number. 5. That the committee be empowered to appoint a ranger ; and to provide the necessary funds for the purposes of the committee, the stock-owners in the district agree to subscribe at the rate of sixpence per head on their stock. 6. That ,1 copy of these resolutions be sent to the Cattle Board and to the VV r AiK.\ro Tim us. A vote of thanks to the Chairman and to Messrs Swarbrick concluded the meeting.

It is exceedingly satisfactory and reassuring at the present moment, when the minds of all thinking men — impartial men — are more or less exercised on the outbreak of pleuro-pneumonia in the Waikato, that we have in our midst a gentleman who is so perfectly acquainted with the disease, and of so large an experience as Mr Naden, M.R.V.C S.L. This gentleman, prior to entering the Eoyal Veterinary College, London, in 1854, served two years as a qualified Veterinary Surgeon. He obtained his diploma in 1856. The following names of recognised authorities are attached to his diploma: — "William Thomas Brande, B. B. Babbington, Richard Quain, W. Sharpe, E. J. Gabriel, M.R C.S. and M.R.C.V.S. The following are the names of veterinary surgeons attached: — James Wilkin, principal veterinary surgeon to the army; James Stockley, veterinary surgeon, Royal Artillery; Jas. Turner. Wm. Robinson, Henry Lepper, and Professors Spooner and Morton. He also holds certificates for having attended two courses of lectures on anatomy, chemistry, materia medica, horse pathology and .cattle pathology, and the diseases of other domesticated animals. He has been in country practice the whole of his life, with the exception of three years that he served in the Royal Artillery. He passed an examination before a Military Board prior to obtaining his commission. With the exception of this, and a short time he was unemployed in this colony, he has alwaysbeen employed in country praotice. He was ten years in the last place he was in in England before leaving for New Zealand, and he holds testimonials from all the leading men in that district. He has seen pleuro-pneuraonia in different counties in England, and also in this colony. He was in England during the outbreak of rinderpest (cattle plague), and has seen a number of case 3 of foot-and-mouth disease, and also of sheeppox.
