MEETING OF THE SOUTH AUCKLAND CATTLE BOARD. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] (FROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER.) Cambridge, Last Night.
A meeting of the Cattle Board was held to-day. Present — Messrs E. Maclean, Fantham, and Captain Steele. The Hon. J. Williamson and Mr Bailey were also present. Inspector Bunciman and Mr Naden reported visiting the farm of Mr D. Macnicol, of Ohaupo, on Tuesday, and suspect that some cattle, five in number, Purchased trom the Swamp Company in anuary are affected ; but before giving a decided opinion wish to have a post mortem examination. In the meantime, Mr Macnicol promised to isolate the cattle. They also reported visiting Mr Burke'a farm on the same day, and found the disease there. Inspector Runciman served notice declaring the farm an infected place. Captain Steele reported that he had to-day received intimation from the Swamp Company's Manager (Mr Reynolds) that there were no further cases of disease and no deaths. He believes the disease is confined to the beasts imported from Sydney. He expressed his willingness, on behalf of the Company, to allow any of the infected cattle to be slaughtered, provided thoy -were afterwards examined by Mr Naden. Ik was reported at the meeting that a number of oattle sold by the .Company during January last had spread over the district, and it was decided to adopt means to trace their whereabouts. It was also decided that Mr Naden should examine Maonicol's and Burkes cattle to-morrow. Owing to no notice having been given to given to Mr Storey, one cf the members of the Board, it was agreed that no resolutions should be passed ; and the Board consequently adjourned, to meet again at Cambridge at 10 a.m. on Saturday, when j Mr Fantham will bring forward a motion calling upon the Manager of the Swamp Company, Captain Steele, and certain employes of the Company to give evidence regarding the measures adopted by them on the outbreak of the disease. Mr Fantham declares that the public will not rest satisfied until such enquiry has been held.
