rpo THE WAIPA COUNTY X . COUNCIL..
Gentlemen*, — We, the undersigned, being Jurymen on the inquest on the body of C. P. Juckes, who lost his life on 30th March, in the Waikato River, settlers on the western bank of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers and surrounding district, beg to bring to your notice the urgent need of a punt at the lower end of the Waipa River, at Ngaruawahia, to enable settlers to gross — themselves and their stock — in safety. We would further draw your attention to the sad catastrophe of 30th March, whereby Mr. C. P. Juckes lost his life in the river Waikato for want of pmnt communication. If a punt were established on the Waipa, at the Ngaruawahia, settlers above and below could drive their stock to and fro in safety. We have also to inform you that the late Mr Juckes himself has lost two horses in crossing the river during the last twelve months, and Mr Moffitt has just lost four fine working bullocks in crossing the Waipa at Ngaruawahia. These are. only a few of the many instances which have occurred in which settlers have lost their stock, and their own lives been endangered through the want of punt accommodation. As the punts at Te Rore and Whatawhata will shortly be at liberty we trust that our petition - may receive favorable consideration. We have reason to believe that if a punt be placed at. the above-mentioned pjace the Ngaruawahia Town Board and Newcastle District Board would materially assist in maintaining the same, and improving present communication. E. R. LAING, Chairman 'Ngaruawahia Town Board, for Board. L. B. HARRIS, Chairman Newcastle District Board, for Board. JOHN SHEEHAN, M.H.R. And 57 other signatures. To Councillor Corbqy.
TO B. C. BEALE, ESQ., M.D., CORONER. Sir,— We, the undersigned, being Jurymen in the inquest held this day on the body of the late Charles Priestly Juckes, beg you ,tp add the following rider to the verdict : — " That it is absolutely essential to the safety of the lives" of men and stock that a punt be established at the mouth of the Waipa River, at Ngaruawahia.
