INSPECTION OF MFAT EXPOSED FOR SALE AND PLEURO-PNEU-MONIA.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— When a member of the Borough Council, upon all occasions I strenuously advocated the establishment of a "Borougk Abattoir," and pressed upon the attention of the Connoil-the «dvisabilttT of their obtaining the power to have all meat ex* poscdtvithintheJiorQugh inspected — hitherto the fault Has been that of the Legialt- . tuxe. , - Ihe Borough Council has time now to represent this defect in the Act and ob. tain what they repuire; the power to establish an abattoir, and also toinjfpect . meat. 3Jn the one case they could |>i»vent diseased cattle being slaughtered, and in the other, if killed , and exposed—condemn it-r-thef public 1 could then, With a degree of confidence, purchase, and also hold some party responsible. '" The question may be , reasonably asked, what is exposed for sale now? From where are the cattle obtained now that are killed ? Are they affected with pleuro? The health of some persons is more easily assailed than -others; if so, | what is it ? can it be attributed to par* i taking of diseased meat? It can be shown that beef slightly affected with I pleuro becomes tasteless in respect to the quality of flavor ; color not altered so as to become specially discernible ; when seriously affected, in some instances, hw a slightly bitter taste, either roast or boiled ; color not possessing a healthy, fresh, crimson-tinted red, but a fufl, dark-colored red. As the constituted authorities are using all diligence within their power to stop infection, I trust you will press upon the Borough authorities the duty they owe to the public in respect to the question of slaughterhouses and inspection of meat- — I am, &c, Albert Potte*.
