GISBORNE, Last Night.
During the past few days a quarrel, threatening to terminate seriously, prevailed among the natives at Huhaki, between Wairoa and Gisborne. The feud is one of long standing between the contending tribes relative to the ownership of valuable land. It is reported that shots were exchanged and one or two lives lost. On Saturday a meeting of the native chiefs of this district took place to determine on a course of action. The native chief We Pere has been requested to proceed at once as peace-maker between the contending parties, but has declined to do so without specific instructions from the Government. The late floods has caused comparatively little damage in this district.
