GARDINER'S GULLY-ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Your paragraph in Saturday's issue, re Gardiner's Gully, being slightly incorrect, allow me to state that the foreman of the works informed me that the amount of titree deposited was 300 bundles, not 350 loads, as stated; and fortunately, too, for the borough funds, that no more was used, as I feel assured that it will share the name fate that befell the quantity deposited last winter, viz., * be washed into the river. More money has been squandered over the titree effort to stop the landslip than would have provided a continuation of piping from the present outlet to the river bank, a course, I believe, the Council intended adopting had it not been that their counsels were divided as to whether or not the tiles could be properly cemented together. The enterprising proprietors of the Waikato Pottery would, I am convinced, be only too glad to instruct their customers, not only now to cement the joints, but how to lay the tiles. As I have observed quantities of them laid in Hamilton with the socket the reverse way, viz., with the socket in the direction of the current instead of against it, a water-tight joint would be difficult to make by such arrangement. In again resorting to titree the Borough Council apparently are not a progressive body, as evinced in their rejecting the scientific appliances of the age in favor of a fascine, as to the springs referred to, I beg to assure you that no springs existed in that part of the property previous to the landslip occurring. The Council, are, therefore, responsible for any further damage. — I am, &c, D. Gardiner.
