PLEURO ON THE CLARENCE.
The stockowners of the Clarence district seem to be firm beleivers in the efficacy of inoculation as a preventive of the spread of pleura-pneumonia. After many years' freedom from this disease, the Clarence herds were attacked reoenty, and inoculation again became general. The Clarence Examiner, in revewing the condition of the stock say a: — "As there should not on this occasion be any doubt as to the efficacy of this precautionary measure, owners wiil no doubt all of them follow the same course as opportunity offers. It is very probable that the disease will appear in different localities almost sinmltmeously, as heretofore, an 1 we give the information, furnished to us by gentlemen who have it in their herds, in order that others may wa'ch for its approach, and be prepared for prompt action. Fortunately inoculation has been so well proved to reduce the percentage of deaths to a minimum that he would be more than culpable who would neglect to avail himself of its protection when the virus may be procured. We shall be glad to hear that the outbreak has been a local one only, and speedly disappear, but think it more likely that it will be found to make an appearance in most herds." Therp are about 75,000 head of cattle in the Clarence or Graf fon district, and about 140,000 on the Kiehinond River ; so it appears that at leat>t stook to the value of £600,000 are in jeopardy by this outbreak. Would it not be well to have some ride, some law to refer to in such an emergency ? The stoekowdera of the Clarence may inoculate, but their brethern of the Richmond m - iy hold back, or the inoculation may be carried in both districts in an irregular and perfunctory wny. It U not creditable to a new country, where such facilities exist for conducting experiments, that pleuropneumonin has been allowed to hold its course for 22 years without any regular action being taken to banish it or impede its progress,
