HAMILTON AND WHATAWHATA ROAD.
Referring to the letter of our own correspondent at Whatawhata, in reference to the Hamilton and Whatawhata Road, appearing in Thur&day's issue, we find that the facts are not exactly aa stated by him. In the first place Mr S. Steele accompanied Messrs Morris and Salmon over the proposed route, the name of the fh-st named gentleman having been omitted in the report. In the next place the inspection by the above named settlers was not " made for the purpose of supporting Mr Stewart in his opinion "that the line is impracticable," but as chairman (Mr Moms acting as substitute for chairman of Newcastle District Board) of the two boards interested. Mr Salmon attended as chairman of the late meeting to point out the road. Our correspondent is also mistaken in supposing that Mr Palmer has been dismissed from the service of the present Government. He is at present surveying for them in the North. We are informed that the Government, on the urgent representation of Mr F. A. Whitaker, will communicate with Mr Palmer on the subject. In conclusion, the visit of Messrs Steele and Monis was undertaken at the express recpiest of Mr F A. Whitaker, with a view to reducing the estimate as far as possible. We believe that the settlers of Whatawhata may rest satisfied that nothing will be left undone to push this important business to a satisfactoi'y conclusion.
