AUCKLAND, Last Night.

At Buckland's sale yesterday, at Remuera, a numerously signed requisition Avas presented to Mr Goodfellow, Chairman of the County Council, requesting him to call a public meeting to protest against the apathy of the Government in regard to the supposed outbreak of pleuro. The meeting will probably take place about Wednesday next at Otahuhu. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL ON THE FLEURO QUESTION. At the Agricultural Pastoral Association meeting to-day, a letter was received from the Hon. Mr Whitaker, in reply to the Association's resolutions — It says with reference to resolution asking the Government to destroy certain cattle brought by Payne from Sydney, that it wonld be useless to do so without destroying all the cattle with which they have mixed, and that the Government have no power : that the only land which is available for quarantine ground is Motuihi, and Mr Barnsby the lessee, is coming up to see what can be done. Further, that the Local Board has amjjle power to arrange quarantine. Attorney Generals letter goes on to say witli regard to the appointment of a duly qualified Veterinary Surgeon, that on carefully considering the whole subject, it has ajjpeared to us that the present arrangement of the Local Cattle Board for the whole provincial district is very insufficient and unsatisfactory, and steps are being taken to divide the district and appoint two efficient boards who will be authorised to employ whenever they think necessary, a qualified Veterinary Surgeon paid by fees in proportion to the work performed. With regard to regulations, I have already informed the local Cattle Board that if any were required to fiacilitato the working of the very large powers they possess I am ready to consider them with a view of recommending 1 their adoption by the Govarnor-iu-C'ouncil The administration of laws relative to diseased cattle is vested in local Cattle Boards, not in Government, and it will be convenient therefore if Boards were first to be communicated with by the iLssociation. Mr May attended the meeting as chairman of Cattle Board, aud made the following report: — "That cattle in neighbourhood of Auckland, among which disease at first broke out are now regularly inspected by himself and an inspector, assisted by a Vetrmary Surgeon; that no fresh spmptoms have shown themselves, aud that present owners have isolated cattle as much as possible so as to minimise the danger ; that two bulls landed from the Hero and Mary Mildred have been duly quarantined and also visited by Inspector at regular intervals. BOARD OF EDUCATION. At the Board of Education election, Messrs Campbell, Luke, and Prime were elected. At a meeting to-day Mills' tender for the erection of the Mangapiko school, for £275, was accepted. It is announced that £15,000 are allowed Auckland out of the £50,000 voted for school buildings. The library grant has been received. The capitation fees are fixed at a shilling per child quarterly. ■ The application of the Paterangi school is deferred ; no funds.
