BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION.

There was very little excitement on Thursday over the Borough Council election for the return of one member in tho place of Cr. Harris resigned. Two of the candidates, Messrs Breakell and Coombes, had really retired from the contest before the polling 1 began, though they could not formally do so, as the Act provides that any candidate may retire by giving notice to the Returning- Officer two days before the day of election. In thi« case there were not two full days between that of nomination and election, and therefore the Returning Officer could only consider those nominated in the light of candidates to the list, and hence the mention of their names in the declaration of the poll. At about 6.30 p.m. the doors of the Council were opened, and the Returning Officer declared as follows : — Price . . •• 9,1 Coates .. . 5^ Gwynne iti Mn-akcll i Coombes ... . . . o There were 171 votes polled, but of these four were informal
