MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

! TO THE EDITOE. ! Sir,— The Hamilton West School Committee appears to have discovered a mares's nest, and is indulging in a good deal of cackling over its imaginary contents. The Committee started on wrong premises, and is now venting its wrath on the Schoolmaster ; because he will not assist the members to prove what never occurred, viz ; — That he was requested to close his school at 2 p.m. on the 16th instant. But assuming that such a request was made, it was not acceded to, nor was the school closed before the usual time. What therefore has the Committee to growl about ? It is competent for any outsider to prefer a request, or make a suggestion to a Schoolmaster without consisting the School Committee, and unless the Schoolmasters travel about with cotton-wool in their ears they can hardly help hearing such requests or suggestions: — the responsibility of acting rests on their shoulders. It seems to me that had the Committee done what it blames someone else for attempting, and closed the school on the occasion of the funeral of the child of one of the masters, it would only have followed the dictates of good tase, and showed ordinary respect to an employee of the Central Board. As to the taste displayed in importing a lady's name into the discussion the less said the better. The whole proceedings of the Committee, as published in your columns are calculated to bring that sapient body into contempt with the public. j Observer.
