WAITOA.
PUBLIC MEETING. A meeting of settlers was held at Mr Thomas Rowes new store, Waihou, on Thursday, the 19th inst., for the purpose of agitating for better postal communication. At the present time there is only a mail twice a week as far as Morrinsville, which is too distant for the settlers of Waitoa, and letters posted there do not arrive at Auckland for two or three days. It is desired now that the mail should run through from Hamilton to Waihou in the same day, and that the mails should leave at a sufficiently early hour to be in time for despatch by the midday train from Waikato. The letter of Mr Biss, the Chief Postmaster, in your issue a few days ago, points out the advantage of the mail contractor being allowed to go through the Swamp Company's ground, as by doing so time would be saved, and enable the mail to get from Waitoa to Auckland the same day. Now that the matter has been brought before the Swamp Company no doubt Mr Reynolds, with that consideration for the public convenience which characterises him, will see his way to permitting the mail contractor to again make use of the private road. W. A. Murray, Esq., M.H.R., occupied the chair, and the following resolution was carried unanimously :—: — Moved by Mr Charles Collins, and seconded by Mr H. Campbell, "That increased postal communication in the Waitoa district is urgently required." The Chairman is to forward this resolution to the Postmaster-General, and a memorial is in course of signature by the settlers. A discussion iipon the state of the roads in the district then took place, and the following resolution, moved by Mr Parr, and seconded by Mr Collins, was carried unanimously: — "That in the opinion of this meeting the main road between the Waitoa and Waihou Rivers j requires improvement, especially the cut- i ting at the east side of Waihikau." The Chairman promised he would forward a copy of the above resolution to the Chairman of the Waitoa District Highway Board.
