NATIVE NEWS. MEETING BETWEEN REWI AND TAWHIAO. [OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Alexandra.

As I informed you in my last week's budget of news the meeting between Tawhiao and Rewi was comparatively a private one. The conference too < place at Hauwai, Kopua, the only other chiefs allowed present being Manuhiri, Te Tuhi and Honana Maioha of the Waikatos, with Taonui and Tv Korehu of the Ngatimaniopoto. At the meeting the slight coolness which has for some time existed between Rewi and Tawbiao was quite removed, and they met on the most cordial terras. They agreed that Te Whiti's action, on the Waimate Plains, was entirely his own affairs, and whatever the result of the present action of the Government it should not cause trouble in WaUato, that they would both stand neutral and keep the peace amongst their own people. A large meeting of natives, under the jurisdiction of Tawhiao, is likely to be held at Hikurangi somewhere about the 6th of March, when all the Taupo and Ngatiraukawa tribes are to be present, but none of the friendlies ,to be invited. *t this meeting Tawhiao will lay down the laws for their future guidance. He wishes to collect as many I as possible of his followers to come and reside there or in the immediate vicinity, I and so live under the shadow of his authority. He requested newi to come and take up his abode with him, but the ! latter declined to give a positive anawei at present, but will do so at the March meeting. Both of them are well inclined towards the present government. Rowgives as an explanation of his at one time, expressed determination of " isola ting himself at Te Kuiti and having no more communication with the Government," that at the time he was vevy poun on account of Sir George Grey not having given him a direct answer to the proposition he had made to his Government, th?t he (nr George) had promised to d«> so in writing, but that the promise had bepn put off from day to day and never fulfilled. Revi did not return vi-i Alexandra to Punui, as riding pains hi j injured arm, ho sent an invitation t Major Yiair to visit him. Major Mail accompanied by WLr ewn, Under >■ ativc Secretary, accordingly proceeded there on Friday la^t, and were most "cordially received by the old chief, with whom thej hid a long and most .-satisfactory interview. On the same evening, by a strange coincidence, Alo^w heehan and Grace also piid Rewi a visit.

NATIVJ3 HARVESTING OPERATIONS. I was up <it iv>pu<i Ust week, and found the natives very busy at their lurvestiug^O'nc* with threshing machineat work, others with then' mowingmachines As the majority of them have planted oats there this ye.ir they were rather pouri at the low prices ruling, otne or them, to save the ex,)e'i-*e oi; thw threshing machine-, are dun# it bv hand, and others by tramping it out with horses. This la durib by in >uutinjj a number of young&ters on horseback, and jogging round a ring on whiuh the oat> a c spread. It appears to suit the juvenile ride s amazinsrly, bub tUe poor horses mu->t find it hard on them judging from their appearance. I he uparrows and linnets must cause a large per oentage of 10-n, as l observed in •places that some of the sheave* appeared as if the grain had been threshed out
