On Monday, the 29th ult., being the anniversary of the colony, a team of rifle Volunteers took occasion of the holiday to visit |he Waihou from the Thames, for the purpose of firinpr a friendly match with the Waitoa Eifle Club, The latter has only been established a short time, and its members have not had many opportunities of practising; but, acting on the suggestion of Major Murray, the Volunteer officer in command at the Thames, when on a visit to the Fiako district, a challenge was forwarded to the Grabarastown Volunteers, which resulted in their visit of the 2Dth January. The range was prepared on Mr Larkworthy's VVaitoa station, with a good background. A shifting wind was blowing all the morning in consequence of which the shooting was far from being so good as it otherwise would have been. It resulted in a decided viotory fur the Thames team, which was captained by Mr Symmington, Major Murray, and Captain Waters also taking part in the match. After the matoh was over the whole party got into traps provided by Messrs Campbell Bros, and Messrs farr and Mellow, and drove on to Mr {Smith's, where luncheon had been made in expectation of their coming, and after doing full justice to the good things so hospitably provided by Mr * mith, the carriages were again put into requisition, and the party drove down through Messrs Campbells fine property to the township of Waihou, and then to Messrs Parr and Mellows place, where a few of them indulged in a swim in the Waitoa.
