HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor and Councillors M'Donald, Peat, Vialou, Davis, dimming, Junes, Knox and Beale. It ■wa* stated that the debentures had not arrived, though a shipping* note had been received of their having been hent from Wellington. On the motion of Cr Knox it was ordered to instruct Messrs. Whitaker and O'Neill to proceed against Henderson and MacfarLiue, the shipping agents, for damage sustained by the nondelivery of the debentures. The question of compelling the tollcollector at the bridge to give a bond was considered very arbitrary and stigmatised a^ cruel, and on the suggestion of Cr Camming it was resolved to make the matter as inexpensive as possible. A letter was read from Mr i'rewheelar, complaining of an injustice in the formation of the footpath pabt his shop not being kept in repair. Cr. Knox supported the application for redress. A similar complaint was received from Mv I . W. Morris. The Mayor was authorised to expend £o on these improvements

He had not bien asked to do so for the west side, 'lhe specifications had been in the chik's ofhee ior two months past, and th.it he was not requested to compnse in onu contract the channelling and curbing ot City hast .mil West with the drainage works ot Mudge-street east. Cr. Vialou stated that had he known these specifications were in the Council he should not have made the remarks he did at the last meeting.
■ BE BRIDGE APPIJOACII FENCING. Twenty minutes were wasted iv recriminations and personalities. Ihe Mayor at last interfsred, stating that he would not allow the time of the Council ta be thus wasted. A suggestion was made by the Mayor and accepted by the Council that the fonce along the approaches should bo placed on the side of the footpath next the roadway, for the protection of foot passengers. Cr. McDonald moved, and Cr. Knox seconded, ' ' That the channelling and kerbing to the bridge approaches be not proceeded with at present, but the necessary drainage b s proceeded with as agreed to at last meeting." Cr. Curaming moved as an amendment, seconded by Cr. Davis, "I hat the kerbing and channelling be done to the straight approaches to the bridge and the necessary drainage," The amendment "was carried. The proceedings were at this stage en • livened by Cr. JBeale accusing Cr. Ktiox ' of making offensive remai"ksin his hearing, and by Cr. Knox staging that he must give Cr. Beale "the lie direct." Cr. Vialou also complained that the words " hanky pauky tricks " applied to his actions, were not parliamentry. A question beiing asked whether tb,e Council was in Committee qv Council, members got back to bubinebs. The Work's Committee report was then read and adopted '
The fluming to protect Mr Gardiner's property was ordered to be fixed. Cr. Vialou was appointed a member of the Work's Committee, iv place of late Cr. Harris. Certain accounts were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
