ALEXANDRA. January 28th 1880,

I hardly know who is to blame, the Government, or the members of our late Highway Board, but since that body were declared illegally elected by the judgment given against them at the instance of Mr Alexander Grant, ' some months since, no election has taken place or has as yet been announced for the voting in of a new Board of Trustees. Consequently all the fine whather is passing away, though works are absolutely required for the safety of the travelling public, nor are any rates being collected. It is to be hoped that the attention of those whose duty it is, will be called to the matter, so that the works so urgently required near the Mangapiko Bridge may be com me teed before the wiater comes on us, or communication from the settfers in that direction will be cut off. Last week our township was somewhat enlivened by a visit from Batchelder's Company, they had two fair audiencies, who unanimously declared it to be the most genuine show erer exhibited here. It is to be hoped it will moot with good support from the other townships. Winiata's brother " Blue Gum" (The name he rejoices in) returned | here from his yisit to Ngapuhi on , Saturday last, having fulfilled the object of his visit, viz., to bring up from thore an aunt of his, a sister of his Father's, and two other old people on a visit to their relatires, I whom they have not seen for a number of years. The report that he was on a mission for Tawhio which , had reached his ears, made him quite I vain. Anyone acquainted with him and the Maori King, would know that the only mission that Tawhio would be likely to entrust him with would be to fetch a coal for his pipe. Tawhio with Manuhiri are at Fikurangi, the Waimate diffculty giving them no disquietude whatever. The natives are alt busy reaping their crops, which are turning out wall considering their rough and ready style of cultivation. Few of them visit the township except on their Sabbath, every tenth day, when they come for any necessaries they may require, or when some of Tawhio's family come with communications for Major Mair. — " Corresponded"
