ALEXANDRA.
Saturday. — Settlers being very busy with their hay crops and the natives har- ■ vesting, business has been very dull in the township this last week. Another of our old settlers has passed away, Mr John Wilson, who died in Auckland on Friday last, where he had gone for medical attendance. Mr Wilson, with the exception of a short trial at the Thames diggings, has resided here ever since the formation of the settlement, having held tho rank of corporal in the 2nd Waikato Militia. The deceased was generally well known and respeoted as a sober, steady and industrious man, and a good father. He carried on business here as a cabinet maker, and leaves a wife and family of five children. There is little or no native news just now — all are too lazy to think' of politics. The Waimate difficulty does not appear to tiouble the Kingites in this direotion. 1 notioe a correspondent, under the signature of " Alexandra," accuses me of forwarding you "a most incorrect and partial account" of the lat© concert, the principal rerson for this t*enoub charge appears to be that I did not make particu lar mention )f the young lady who san^ " ever of I hee." I am under the impression that I gave Miss Allan and Mr* Capel full justice in my leport, which was somewhat abbreviated in you> columns. [The report was published areceived] If this wan not the cane it was an inadvertence I regret, as I, with the rent of the settler*, have a great respect for both ladies, and fully appreciated their performance, even as" Alexandra." With regard to Mrs Duffus, my remarks about the " re -appearance of some of our old friends," it was to her I principally alluded. I wan not aware that it wan Mrs Duff us' piano, although had I given it a thought 1 might have been sure of it, as few other ladies in the settlement happen to have their pianos in tune when a conoert is coming off. The gentle man from whom I gleaned my particulars only mentioned the names of the committee of gentlemen concerned in getting up the concert. — [Own Correspondent.]
