LAST NIGHT'S NEWS. London, January 8.

CHRISTCHURCH. The riot cases are adjourned.

AUCKLAND.

WELLINGTON.

Bismarck supports a company which ia to be formed for the purpose of replacing* Godeffrois firm. The Iri&h distress is increasing*. Tenants, are refusing to pay their rents, and are being served with notices of eviction. The process servers are roughly used.

At the Board of Education to-day an application was received from the Cambridge West District stating that an extra school building was very much wanted some 30 children not attending any school without great inconvenience. IVIr O'Sullivan said the children had over three miles to go to attend the nearest school, which was not to be expected. Mr Peacock moved, "That the committee inspect more urgeut cases, hud leporfc thereon.'" An application was also received from I Kirikiriroa for a school building. There were 20 children. Mr Peacock thought a good sized room sufficient. Mr o' Sullivan thought that some of the most influential settlers might give the use of an outbuilding. The settlers were much scattered. The settlers had agreed to contribute A' lo towards the building. It wa& agreed on the motion of the Mayor to make inquiry for a suitable place for holding a school. Six tenders were re- I ceived for a school building at Hamilton East, and Mr Allwright recommended that the lowest, £430, be accepted. The highest tender was £620. Particulars no* mentioned. The matter was allowed to stand over.

At 4 o'clock on Thursday inorning the Maori pri&oners at Mount Cook Barracks were suddenly roused from sleep, and marched down, under a strong escort of Aimed Constabulary, to the wharf, where 91 were put on board the Hinemoa, for Dunedin, and 43 on board the Stella, for Hokitika. The prisoners seemed to be much surprised at the feuddenness of the movement to make any protest, but they were extremely sullen in their demeanoiu 1 . The object of the Government in taking this step, is the double one of placing the prisoner*) as far as pos&ibic beyond the I reach of Te Whiti's influence, and, in view of possible contimgencies, of Armed Constabulary hitherto engaged in guarding them, and rendering them available for active service in the field, if necessary, The Post, which is the organ of the Government in such matters, claims this move on the part of the Government iis> a brilliant coup, but I am informed on direct authority that it has had the effect amongst the Maoris in and about Wellington of enraging- them, and that when the news reaches Parihaka it will be calculuted tg have a fijmjjar effect thorc.
