The sports here yesterday were a great success. A large number of settlers' families were present, the liauhaus, however, represented by Tawhiao's family with their friends, largely predominating. All passed off most agreeably, pakehas and Maoris fraternising most pleasantly and not a single fracas occurring. Drunkenness was conspicuous only by its absence. Two concerts took place in the evening. The nigger entertainment in aid of the Public Hal attracted the sympathies of the natives, resulting in a full house; the dance which took place afterwards concluding only at diylii^ht and was conducted throughout with the utmost decorum. The concert and soiree in aid of St. Saviour's Church, with the usual dance as a finale, was held in the schoolroom. There was a bumper house made up of settlers and their families. The performance was most excellent, several old friends making their re-appear-ance. Mr Aubin, as Chairman, ably assisted by the Revs. Mr Brady and Mr Phillips made the affair a great success.

Three thousand persons marched in procession on New Year's Day, cheering the Queen and Orangemen. There was no disturbance. The rioters have been brought up and remanded. The strpets on Wednesday night were crowded with people, but no disturbance is anticipated. Fifty \rmed Constabulary arrived from Wellington on Wednesday. At a meeting of the Roman Catholics, held on Tuesday evening, at which F ither ( hataignier presided, the following resolutions were unanimously passed: — Ist.
