GENERAL ROBERT'S POSITION PERILOUS.
Calcutta, December 19. The following are further details of the fighting of the 14th :— The Affghans, to the number of 30,000 made several desperate attacks. General Roberts Jost one gun. He telegraphed to tli9 Viceroy that help was urgently necessary. December 17. It is believed 'the British are in position at Sberpar in strong cantonments with strong fortifications outside of Cabal. The hills in rear aie in possession of British troops. The British entrenchments ai'e strengthened with ample supplies of material. There is every reason to believe the position is tenable pending, the arrival of reinforcements. General Gough's advance is stopped by hostile tribes. Reinforcements are being snnt froinPeshawar, where reserve forces are forming.
