HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the adjourned meeting held on Thursday evening, there were present — His Worship the Mayor, aud. Crs. Beale, Knox, Jones, Harris, Cuimning, Peat, and McDonald. Sundry accounts were brought forward, considered, and passed. Or. Jones mpred, '" That the accounts of Mitchell and Daly he reduced to £7 each." — Seconded by Cr. Harris. Cr. McDonald moved as an amendment, "That the accounts be referred back to Cr. Yialoxi, with a view to their being reduced."—Seconded by Cr. Knox. Cr. Jones rose to reply, but was ruled out of order by the Mayor. Cr. Beale protested against the ruling. The amendment was carried. Those incurred in the decoration of the bridge on the opening day were referred to the Engineer. On the question of Messrs Livingstone and Booth's account being brought up, Cr. McDonald objected that the contracthad not been completed in a satisfactory manner, explaining that the backing-up was not what it should be, and would oppose the payment of the money. ' The Engineer stated that the work was thoroughly completed, and that the matters complained of by. Cr. McDonald were outside Livingstone and Booth's contract altogether. Cr. Knox said it was useless to refuse to pay the deposit of £51 back when the Engineer had certified to the completion of the contract. Cr. Knox moved, "That the account bo paid." — Seconded by Cr. Peat, and carried. A further account for the sum of £150 0s 7d, balance of contraot price was also considered. As this sum would have brought the total amount paid » beyond the contract price, pr. McDonald moved, " That before passing the account a report of all extras in connection' with the i contract be furnished by the Engineer on Monday." — Seconded by Cr. Jones, and carried unanimously.. A claim for £18 los, from Messrs Ross and D unbar, for building retaining wall to preserve Mr Inuis's property, was also passed. The report of the Engineer was then read as follows : — 11 Hamilton, Dec. 10th, 1879. " The Mayor and Councillors, Borough of Hamilton. " G-entlemen, — I proceeded to Auckland agreeably to your instructions, and, interviewed Mr btewart, the District Engineer, and have to report that I consi- s der I obtained very favorable response to my applications. " The Engineer -in - Charge North Island had telegraphed that he had placed £250 on the Estimates towards cost of stone protective works. Further particulars I shall be prepared to give you this nig-ht if required. "I also arranged with Mr Stewart as to the bridge extras. ! ' Jio the item in dispute (Messrs Ross and Dunbar's), I recommend the Council to resolve themselves into committee, as I consider^ it only fair to the contractors that their agent should have the power to state his case. As to my opinion on the matter, I heg to refer you to my report. — I am, &c, : " William C. Breakkll." , It^ •vas resolved, on the motion of Cr. McDonald, seconded by Cr. Cumming, to invite the Steam Navigation Company, to state the lowest price at which they, will supply stone from Tuakau at the bridge for protective purposes. — Carried ununi- ■ mously.
