INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.

A mUeting of the Hamilton Borough Council for the installation of the new Mayor, Captain Dawson, was held yeaterdaj at noon. Treaont : Crs. Knox, Jones, Hums, Ciimming, Peat, and McDonald ([Chairman). Tho election returns having been duly 'read and tho Mayor elect having been introduced ' by the Chairman took the usual obligations. Or. McDonald v then vacated the chair, congratulating both tho Council and the burgesses, saying- :— He had much pleasure m placing the new Mayor m this chair, and believe from his knowledge of him as a Cr, that he would perform tho duties appertaining to his responsible office, m a fair and impartial manner, and also believed he would have the confidence as well as the respect of the Council, and that they would each one of them support him iv his arduous duties. He might be somewhat surprised to hear that the duties were arduous; but no one .who occupies that position could be permitted to take things easy, as a good deal of time and thought must necessarily be given to the interests as well as the business of the Borbugh. He had now to congratulate the new Mayor on being placed m the highest position the buigesses could place one of their number, and had every confidence that he would fill the position with honor to himself y satisfaction to this Council' and that through his exertions the interests of the Borough would be very much advanced. His Worship then said :— lt is with a considerable amount of diffidence that I now occupy the responsible position of Mayor of Hamilton, and believe me I shall always endeavor, to carry out the duties devolving on my office m a manner to ensure the confidence of this Council and hope by that means to secure your support. The duties of my office are, as you remark arduous, but with your assistance I believe that they can be carried out with great benefit to the Borough, the advancement of which will be my great aim. I have now to return my hearty thanks to yourselves and to the burgessos I for the honor conferred upon me by placing me m the Chair, and hope that the business of this Council may always be done m as pleasant a manner as the present. Or. Knox as one of the junior members, expressed his pleasure at the appointment, and assured the new Mayor of hia support m expediting business. The Council then adjourned.
