WAIKITO V. WAIPA. The first of what we hope will be annual contests between those counties came off yesterday at Camb idge, and resulted in a victory for Waikato, with 39 runs to spare. J. Wood was elected captain tor Waikato, and Grierson for Waipa, and the latter having won the toss put in his opponents, who were all quickly disposed of for 34 runs, Stubbing making top score, with 8 extras, amounting to 10, the rest of the team mailing 16 amongst them. Waipa made only 40 at their" first attempt although Gleeson and N. R. Cox got 15 t« start with before a wicket fell. In their second innings Waikato totted up 92, Stubbiugs being again to the fore with 10, C. C. Wood 12, Fitzpatrick 12, and J. Wood 10 also getting into double figures. The bowling of Waipa was loose for some time in this innings, ditto the fielding of some of the men, but Bond did well, securing five wickets for very few runs. Wood's seven wickets in the first innings for 9 runs, and indeed to him must be attributed the winning of tho match, assisted as he was by the excellent bowling of Martin in the second innings. Soper's batting whilstgetting his score of 18 was decidedly the bsst of the day. Messrs R. Parr and Copeland acted as umpires, and gave every satisfaction to the players. The Cambridge Brass Band played various selections on the ground, much to the edification of the public, but the afternoon's enjoyment was considerably marred by the rain which fell during the time the Waipa team were fielding.
