A. meeting of the Borough. Council was . held last night, but though specially called to pacs certain accounts, such matters were passed over for bitter and wordy disputations. Owing to our printing staff being short-handed yesterday, the report, the' leading article and other matter is unavoidably omitted. I Cbbjstmas Day falling on Thursday, to give the staff of the Waikato Times a holiday on Boxing Day will entail the suppression of the issue of > aturday, the 27th inst. A private telegram received from Wellington by a gentleman in Hamilt6n,Btates that tenders for the Thames-Waikato railway will be called for this week. The right of collecting the Hamilton bridge tolls ia to be leased by public auction on Thursday afternoon next, at 2 o'clock, at Grwynrie's Hamilton Hotel. There is considerable dissatisfaction expressed by the burgesses at the manner in which the bridge and punt tolls have been dealt with of late. They were let by public auction for a certain monthly sum for the period next ensuing until the opening of the bridge, but the terms of the lease were never adhered to. A representation was made by the lessee that he could not afford to pay the sum he had bid for them, and instead of giving the next bidder the chance of taking them, or putting them up again to auction, the Council has monthly, for some time past, remitted a sum of £lB from the month's rent, giving the present lessee a monopoly. This act of favoritism is regarded ao an injury, not only to those who competed for the right to collect the tolls, but to the borough funds, and, worse scill, this continually pleading that the rent cannot be made, is likely to have a most injurious effect on the letting of the bridge tolls on Thursday. We would therefore suggest that they be let only fop one month, and that the Council do what it should have done since the bridge was opened, employ some trustworthy person 'to check the amount of traffic so as to form some reasonable idea oi the value of the tolls, with a viow to letting the right of collection hereafter at a fair rate. Since writing the above the announcement is made that the tolls will be let for one month only. At the meeting of the Education Board on Friday, the committee recommend the dates for the'commencement and termination of holidays in public schools to be from 22nd December to 23rd January* for the Girls' High School, 16th December to 3rd February. The committee also recommended that the erection of the school at Puniu be proceeded with on receipt of the local contribution. Water in Schools.—A very important matter affecting the health of the children was discussed at the meeting of the Auckland Education Board on Friday. Upon an application for a grant to obtain a supply of water, Mr Luke said there ought to be a filter in every school. At this season of the year water frequently became stagnant and. impure, and wholly unfit to drink. , He knew a school where there was a supply of water in the tanks, but it had become filthy stuff. The children could not drink it, and those who could bring milk did so. There were places where milk was not to be had. He thought the board ought to consider this matter. It was becoming very important. . On Sunday there was a heavy and continuous downpour of rain which cannot but have been very welcome to all bufc those whose hay was still afield. In the strseta of Hamilton some little damage was done. There was a settlement in several places over the drain at the junction of Wharf and Victoria-streets, and some little damage was done to the ap-/ proachea on either side the bridge. The latter were seen to early on Monday morning so that traffic should not be saspended. Whilst alluding to the approaches we might suggest that a very great convenience to those coming to the bridge from the opposite direction to the Bast Hamilton township would be effected if at the cost of two or three pounds in levelling- a ahort space of ground, a road were made so that the bridge could be approached direct, instead of going all the way round by the Presbyterian Church.
We have received, from Mr Andus Raynes, of the National Hotel, Cambridge, an almanac card for 1880, which is most tastefully got up. The centrepiece is a chromo lithograph, occupying' nearly the whole of the sheet, representing a country girl at a cottage door watching two doves billing and cooing. The almanac is-in two narrow columns on each side, and simply the name of the hotel and of the proprietor, and " A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" at the bottom. He has a large number for distribution among his friends and customers, and there are eighteen different prints. .The sale of three racehorses, at Christchurch, on Saturday, with engagements, belonging to the late Mr J. ■'tfallock, attracted a large attendance of sporting men at* Messrs Ford and Co.'s Horse Bazzar. The first led out was Foul Play, for whom the bidding started at 300 guineas. By rapid bids of 25 guineas 800 guineas was soon reached, at which price he was knocked down to the Hon. W- Robinson. On difc was '• nocked down to the same purchaser at 175 guineas, and Marie Antoinette to Mr John Brabaaou for 70 guineas. It was mentioned at the sale that there was a commission held from his Excellency the, Governor to bid up te 500 guineas for Foul Play. Mb P4.7NE, fro m New Zealand, says the Town and Country Journal, has once more here the Duke of Newcastle, who was champion at last show twelvemonth, and two other bulls. I hays not seen them, but "The Puke" could haye been sold for a lot of money when he was here before, and if he be only kept in fair stud condition he will be valuable as a sire. Mr Want catalogues carefully a lot of fine Durhams belonging to Mr Samuel Hoskisson, of Clifton, near Windsor, and they are a pretentious lot. The M'Dougall bull, General Gourke, is the only male in this lot, and the females number among them severa l very wellbred ones, including the Imported cows Wed Duchess 9th, Kosebud 7th, and British. Rose, with the New Zealand I heifer First Duchess of Dashper, bred by I Messrs T, and S, Morrin,
The opening of tho Waipa and Raglan Road is already beginning to lntve tho predicted effoot of causing increased intercommunication between Raglan and Waikato. Our Raglan correspondent, to-day notices the first arrival of a Waikato settler and his family to spend a few weeks, at what will, in a year or two, become a very favourite' and .general resort for tho Waikato people during some portion of the summer months. In this caso the trip Avaa made in a covored-in Milburn wagon, but when the 'punt at Hamilton is removed to Whatawhata, which will be done at a very early date, we shall be much surprised if a bi-weekly public conveyance be not run between Hamilton and Raglan, during the summer months at any rate.
Kirijciriroa. Tenders for cutting Johnson's Hill (Hamilton road), for draining and forming, road through swamps from Hukouui road to the river road, and for cutting and forming a portion of the river road through Claude's farm, will be received up to noon of Friday next.
