HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

1 A meetjuKiO of the Hamilton Borougl ' Council was held yesterday. Present: ; Crs. Peat, Vialou, McDonald, Harris, and , Knox. | Cr. Macdonald having been votod intc I the chair, the clerk notified the election oi Messrs W. dimming and Jones, who i were introduced and took the oath and their seats. A. telegram was read, from Mr F. A. Whitaker, stating thafc the opinion of the < Attorney- General was that the punt was the property of the colony, but that it might be used anywhere on the Waikato River when desirable. Waikato-Thames railway first to be commenced. Cr. Vialou moved, "That.thepuntbe handed over for the use of the Whatawhata ferry, providing that the Waipa Council hand over the Whatawhata punt to the residents at Pukete." Carried unanimotfsly. The Chairman thought some more definite information should be got with respect to the commencement of the Thames- Waikato railway at this end of the line. Cr Knox thought a public meeting should be called to strengthen. the hands ef the district members. If such a thing were pending m the case of the Thames a public meeting would at once be called. Or. Knox then moved, and Cr. Vialou seconded, "That a public meeting be called for Tuesday evening for the purpose of urging the Government to a speedy undertaking of the Thames-Wai-kato railway at Hamilton. Cr. Vialou stated that the telegram re- . ceived by a gentleman m Hamilton from Wellington, stating that there was no truth m report about the diversion of the railway was so vague that it was desirable to have something more explicit. It might mean anything or nothing. A discussion arose as to whether the question of making the bridge free of toll should also be considered atto-nights meeting. 'J his was agreed to, and the resolution as amended was carried. A letter was received from Mr Trewheellar, complaining that the people . wishing to go from Wharf -street into ' Victoria-street had to go up as high as the Post Office, and asking that the cross street between Wharf and Victoria- streets be opened up. Cr. Knox spoke m favour of the proposal. On the motion of Cr. Peat, seconded by Cr. Dawson, the letter was simply ordered to ba received. The Chairman proposed that a sum not exceeding £5 be expended m opening the street required. Cr. Vialou would like to see tho work done out of the bridge approaches fund, and Wharf-street made decently, forming the foothpath on both sides. and moved as an amendment that the | matter stand over for the present. Cr. Vialou seconded the motion m as much aa £5 was quite inadequate to the work. j The original motion was carried. I An application was made from Mr Jolly, claiming a sum of £26 10s, the balance unpaid for land taken for the railway. ■■ ■'. Cr. Vialou thought tho claim for £18 15s was just enough, but that it should be made against the Government. _ Cr. Knox thought that every consideration should be shown to Mr Jolly. He bad treated the Borough all through m a generous manner, and moved- that the matter be referred to the member for Waipa to explain and to arrange wich the Minister of Works. Carried unanimously; The balance, £7 10, was, on the motion of Cr. McDonald, seconded by Cr. Vialou, ordered to be at once paid. .The Council met at 7.30 after adjournment, when Cr. Beale took his seat. Moved by Cr. Cumming, seconded by Cr.Knox, that tho report of the committee appointed for. the opening of the Bridge ceremony be adopted. Cr. Beale movedas an amendment, that that portion having reference to Cr. Vialou bo not adopted. For the amendment, Crs. Vialou, Beale, and Jones. Againft it, Crs Knox, Harris, Cumming,- Dawson, Peat, and McDonald ; the original motion was carried. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Knox to advertise for tenders for making and lettering the necessary boards for the bridge. * It was proposed that a sum of £18 lis Odbc removed from the Borough Fund Account to the Special Account. Cr Beale moved that the matter be deferred to its proper order. For the amendment, Crs. Beale, Peat, and Vialou. The original motion was declared carried. Sundry accounts were then passed. It was resolved to advertise for the services of a Borough Valuer. (Left sitting.)
