' The following highly interesting figures have been published in a tabular form >by the RegistrarGeneral of Ne»v South Wales,showing the relative position of' the Australian colonies and their aggregate importance at the end of the year 1378. The table includes the whole of the Australian colonies, but it will perhaps be only necessary to take tbc three holding the first positions. The table, as a whole, is most instructive. To begin with, the relative estimated mean population of *<he three colonies—New Sooth Walos, Victoria, and New Zealand—stands thus, in the order named : 677,979,869,040, 423,460 ; whilst the total revenue collected during the year was : New South Wales, £4,983,864 ; Victoria, £4,504,412; and New Zealand, £4,167,889, showing that Victoria only collected £336,524 more than New Zealand, though possessing more,'than double the population. The figures under the above heading of total revenue, include the amount raised by taxation, which are as follows : New South Wales, £1,309,717; Victoria, New Zealand, which would make the rate of taxation per head of population: New. South Wales, £1 18s 7&dj Victoria, £1 19s 10£ d; New Zealand, £3 15s sd. The total value of the imports was: New South Wales,, £14,768,873; Vic toria,'£l6,l6l,Bßo; New Zea. land, £8,755,663; showing the value of oar imports as more than £2 over those of Victoria per head of population, and would stand thus: New South Wales, £2l 15s 8d; Victoria, £lB lis ll^d; New Zealand, £2O 13s 6£d. The total value of exports: New v South Wales, £12,965,879.; Victoria, £14,925,707; New Zealand, £6,015,525; valae per head: New South Wales, £l9 2s sfd; Victoria, £l7 3s Gd'; New Zealand, £l4 4s l|d; which would show that in respect to the value of imports to exports, the difference in favor of imports per head of population would be: New South Wales, £2 1354-3fd; Victoria, £1 8s s|d; JNew £6 9s sd. Iu plain English, each individual in this country sends away £6 9s 5d annually, speaking approximately, more than he receives. That portion of the table which is devoted to public work expenditure is also very interesting as showing the number of miles of railway opened in the three colonies. They stand thus : New South Wales, 733*, of which about 43 miles are private lines; Victoria, 1,052; New Zealand, 1,089. In course of construction : New South Wales, 207J-; Victoria, 72; New Zealand, 142. ' Miles of telegraph opened: New South Wales, 7,078; Victoria, 2,970; New Zealand, 3,434. That portion devoted to agricultural and pastoral statistics gives the following figures :—Number of acres under crop :' New South Wales, 613,942 ; Victoria, 1,609,278; New Zealand, 2,053,910 —in regard to this item wc are told in a note, that tbcre is included in it above a quarter of a million acres in grass having been broken up, in. eludes such as in bay, but exclusive of a million and a-balf of grass lands not previously ploughed, including such as in hay, and 263,353 acres broken up but not under crop. South Australia como3 next to Now Zealand, wilh an acreage under crop of 2,011,319. In regard to horses, New South Wales occupies the premier position with 336,468; Victoria next with 210,105; New Zealand, 137,768. Cattle : New South Wales, 2,771,583 ; Victoria,! 1,184,843 ; New Zealand, only | 578,430. Sheep : New South Wales, 23,967,053 ; Victoria, 9,379,276; and New Zealand, 13,069,338. Under the head of pigs the following highly interesting figures are given us, though withwhat amount of accuracy it is hard to say: New South Wa'les, 220,330; Victoria, 117,373; New Zealand, 207,337. We are unable,; to say whether this wca\d include Maori porkers. The estimated population (in distinction to mean population), at the ond of the year stood thusr: New South Wulqb, 003,743;
Victoria, 879,442; New Zealand, 432.519; witllV public v debt of £11,G88,119, ' £17,022,065, and .£22,608,311 respectively. New Zealand's dobb ia made 'up of two items accrued , sinking fund, .£1,678,127; net debt, .£20,930,184.. Makintr an iudividal liability per head of population: New South Wales, £l6 16s 11 jd; Victoria, £l9 7s New Zealand, £52 5s sd—the only .colony that in ' any way approaches this proud distinction is Queensland, with £42 8s lid per head, for a public debt of £8,935,550 only.
