THE AUCKLAND AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION'S SHOW.
[From tho Hcrald.~\ The principal event of the day undoubtedly was tho Agricultural and Pastoral Show held at Ellerslie. The general desire expressed that the show for the year 1879 should be superior to that of tho preceding events, and the ( Association's efforts, ably seconded by the j general public, proved eminently successful. The weather was beautiful, the attendance large, the arrangements perfect, and tho suocess unqualified. The attendance might be averaged at about 3000 people The utmost* satisfaction prevailed throughout the proceedings. A single protest was lodged, and that was with regard to some cut flowers. Of courso there was the usual dissatisfaction exprossed by some exhibitors who did not secure first prizes, but the general feeling was that fair play had been given by the judges to all and sundry. HORSES; The class stewards m this section wore Messrs W. McLaughlin and W. Styak, and the judges Messrs J. S. Caverhill, G. flawkes, R. McCrac, and Morton. Musket, looking ovory inch a grand and noble horse, was tho cynosure of all eyes from tho opening of the show until its close. His magnificent proportions, his equable temper, and his lout ensemble took the public ,<aze, while his reputation as a racer and as thosiro of race- winning stock secured for him a large proportion of the public attention. No. 1 stall, which he occupied, was a lovee throughout the day. Jn the nest stall tvus bis stable compa-
nion, that ftno old horse Knottingly, looking- every inch a gentloman and a racer all over. His 16 years seemed to bear lightly on him. Ho was slightly lamo, but all the old spirit which m former years carried him through so mary hard fought r cos m Canterbury appeared m his brilliant eyes and intelligent head. There was another entry m this class, Mr Buckland's Omega, by Sledmere, but he did not put man appearance. In young blood stock, Messrs Fergusson of vVaikato, tho importers of three thoroughbred mares from liuglaud, carried off the first aud second honors m tho two-yoar-old atock. Tomato, an elegant looking chestnut with white face, out of Lyra by Thunderbolt, secured first honors and competed with Muaket for the Champion 'Prize. Blackcock, a bay colt with black points, by Thunderbolt out of Dundee Katie, took second prize. There were five entries, including two Fove colts and one of those recently imported from Australia, a colt owned by Sir J. Lennard of Epsom, by Maribyrnong out of Lady Audley. Jhis colt has grown into fine proportions since his arrival m the colony, and is one which is likely to make his ma. k here. H e did not obtain first prize, but was highly commended, Tho Feve colts, one of which out of Atlanta was commended, were both small, but wellbuilt and compact. The contest m this class was the most exciting of the day, as the competitors represented different nationalities or places. Mr Fergusson'a pair wore English-bred, Mr Lonnard's Australian, and the Feve colts Now Zealand. The decision of the judges gives the English colts the palm, although the owner entered them at a disadvantage. In consequence of having* been hegob iv England, where the time fer calculating ages is different from that of New Zealand, he had to allow five months, and it was easy to arrive at a conclusion as to j what extent of growth that makes m a two-year-old colt. With these disadvan- j tages, however, the prizes were carried off. Thunderbolt is one of the most popular sires m England. His stock are much sought after, and his services cannot at present be obtained for a mare under 40 guineas. Mr Fergusson informs us that yesterday he was offered 450 guineas for Tomato by Mr A.. McLean, of Napier, but the offer was refused. The yearlings wore represented by a Papapa colt out of Una, and a Pacific colt out of Occult. Neither of them could be said to bo m good condition. The former had only recently recovered from a fit of strangles, and the latter bore the appearance of being: hungry. The stud mares had a moderate representation. The cup to be the absolute property of any exhibitor taking the champion prize three times. The annual winner to hold the cup from Show time till fourteen days preceding the ensuing Show. Animals entered as competing for the above prize, must be also entered m their respective classes. — K. H. D. Pergusson, eh c Tomato ; Auckland Stud Co., br h Musket, aged. This p ize was awarded, after a very cursory judgment, to the Company's studhorse Musket. CATTLE. The class stewards were Messrs William Hunter, \ . a nderson, W. Bainbridge, and J. Bainbridge. The judges were Messrs John Elliott, Charles otorey, Richard Bobbs, and — Mckinnon. This was one of tho most important sections m the show, and the stranger who yesterday visited Ellerslie for the first time could not fail to be impressed with the attention some of our farmers have given to improving their herds, and also of the agricultural wealth of the district. Shorthorns were unmistakably the favorito animals, for though Herefords wore represented m large numbers, v» essrs Maclean and Co. had the monopoly of the exhibits. It was not so m Shorthorns. In this division the exhibitors were fairly numerous, though Messrs Maclean and Co., Messrs T. and S. Morrin, and Mr A. A. Fantham, of Gwynneland, Waikato, were the chief exhibitors. In the 47 animals m the Shorthorn class exhibited there were, of course, no doubt a considerable variation m points of excellence ; but taken as a whole, few such collections could be found m Sew Zealand. The Duke of York, that took first prize m class 45, is a splendid animal, and was m excellent condition. He has a magnificent frame, and every point requisite for the laying on of flesh, appears to he fully developed. His owners are Messrs Maclean and Co., and bis sire is the well-known 9th Colonel Treguntor, out of Ladj' Eleanor. In the class of bulls between one and two years old, Messrs Maclean and Co. were again the successful piize-takers with Sir Hercules, one of the offspring of the Duke of Newcastle, that carried ofl the champion prize of Australia a year or two ago. This is a beautiful animal, but does not appear as if he would attain the same proportions as his sire. He is but young, however, and will probably increase m size. Mr Fantham's bull calf, Darlington, that carried off the champion, prize the other week at CambridSe, was oxliibited, and took first place m his class against six competitors. He is a fine-looking 1 animal, of great promise. The celebrated Duke of Newcastle was shewn by his owners, Messrs Maclean and Co., as extra stock, and throughout the day was a subject of very general attraction. At times it was amusing to listen to the remarks of the bystanders upon his merits, remarks frequently madg by those who knew very little of the distinctive characteristics upon which the different breeds of cattle depend. In the class of three-year-old Gows Messrs Maclean and Co. were successful m securing firsb honors with Anemone by Earl Derby. This is a fine-looking animal, but does not appear to possess the same character as Lady "leanor, belonging to the same firm. In the class of two-year-old heifers, Messrs T. and S. Morrin were successful with Pet's Purple Ist, which is a very promising nnimal. Fos the best cow, with calf at foot, Lady Eleanor took firat prize. Her calf had the Duke of Newcastle for sire. Of course it is impossible to judge from the present appearance of the calf what it might be at its maturity, but with such parents the future may be discounted with some degree of certainty. Iv the class of grade cattle, the exhibits were more numerous than usual. There was also an evident improvement m some instances. Mr J. Dilworth brought forward several promising-looking heifers. Two especially were deserving of notice, and each succeeded m securing first prize. One was a beif er, 2 yeara 8 months old, by Robin - dair, out of one of his herd. Thia was a beautifully formed animal, and had tho points necessary for taking on a very large proportion of flesh. The second of the animals referred to was 1 year 9 mouths. It was of slighter build than the other, and though it took first prize m its class, it will never prove equal to its elder full sister. Mr Joseph May was also a successful exhibititor m this section, as was also VI r Johns of Mangare So far as Herefords were concerned, Messrs Maclean and Co. had ' jt practically to themselves.
The collection was a number of splendid animals; buo as thoy all came from ono hord, there was not tho sarao interest taken m them as would have boon the case hod several other exhibitors been running this firm hard for first place. In otbor purobred cattle — there woro several good cattle exhibited by Mr T. R. Woolfield, Mr T. Morriu, and others. The Alderneys are generally regarded as very tame and gentlo animals, and indeed m many -places they are made pots of ; but oue little two-year-old heifer kept a larsye crowd' lively for a long time by the persistent' efforts to box those who desired to look at it. Ayrshire cows were, also exhibited by Mr A. Buokland. This is the first oeoiision this kind of oattlc have been made a feature injour looal show, and though they were not very superior animals, it is to bo hoped that they will form a section iv each succeeding annual show. In the district which gives them their name they are highly prized, and for milkers they are not excelled. Fat cattlo were well represented us to quality, though their numbors were rather few. Messrs Fb>her and Co., Messrs Maclean aud Co., and Mr Henry Reynolds were the principal exhibitors m this section. Though these were the priucipal exhibitors, the first prize fell to Messrs Heliaby Brothers with an ox bought about a month ago from Mr W. J. Taylor for .£25. Though large he was not such a well-proportioned animal as the Hereford, m the adjoining pen, belonging to Messrs Maclean and Co. Subjoined are the prizes awarded : — Suosthoens. .For the host hull, 3 years old and over. — "lßt prize, t4 : 2nd, L 2 10s.
