PEDIGREE SHEEP FOR WAIKATO.

In our issue of the 16th we republished from the 'Heiald' a notice of the purchase by Mr Payne of 50 Lincoln hoggetts from the ffock of Messrs. - Maclean & Co., for Mr Douglas, of Waikato, at the rate of £20 each. We mentioned this price as being the highest yet received, and beleiving that the sheep were of the same strain as thuse sold m February, 1878, by Mnjor Jackson, for Maclean & Co., to ,be sent to NTapiei, contrasted the price obtained now and then, We find, howe-er, that we were altogether mistaken m supposing that the sheep just purchased from Maclean & Co. were of the same strain of blood, Mr J. A. Douglas writes to us complaining that such a statement going forth from the Waikato Times is calculated' to damage the reputation of his flock, and encloses the following letter from Major Jackson for publication, which explains the mistake into which we had inadvertently fallen m our issue of the 16th inst : — 1 Kihikihi, 20 October, 1879; : Bruntwood Sir, — I notice m tEe Waikato Tidies, of tEe 16 th instant a reference to tEe sale of pure Lincoln sheep to y6u by Messrs;-. Maclean & Co., m which it is stated that they are of tEe same blood as tEose sold by the latter gentleman to Mr Scale of Napier. -In- 'order to remove, any adve se influence the above notice may. have T>roduced as to the pedigree of tEe sheep~you havo bought I may state that m February, 1578,' I. sold on account of Mesrrs. Maclean & C 0.,. to air Sealebf. JSapier 210 ewe hoggetts, to be delivered per steamer m Auckland, for tEe sum. of eight guineas each, ; These' 21,) sheep were- guaranteed to be full sisters of tEe rams I sold at Napier Ram Fair tEe same year,, and : it was. further stated tEey did not include any of tEe produce of tEe 90 ewes and : Earns" imported by Mr Russell, per "Ardvar." TEe 51 ewes you Eave now purchased are all pureb ed, and out of English ewes, and tEe first and only produce of the above ever sold m the colony.— l am, sir, yours truly, William Jackson. We give insertion at once »o the above explanation, as we should 1)6 sorry that any *trenieut, such as the one above co-Jti-plained of, though published m all good faith, should, have the very opposite' tendeu y to that meant, anl . iitj-ire instead of j-u-TVy hn in 'eve* sof on locil she^p br^ <\ m,
