The proprietors of the HaivJcc's Bey Htrald having been served with writs on behilf of Major Mair and :*r Searancke, claiming damages for an. article headed " Pc-litical Traitors," reflecting npon them, published in the Herald of the 14th Junj last, have iu the belief that the article referred to contained statements libellous and untrue, offered to make a full apology, and to pay £ 50 into Court in each case. ajor »' air and Mr Searancke, through M e.«srs Bulier and I ewis, their solicitors, have been pleased to accept thi* offer. Ihe proprietors of the Herald therefore desire to tender a sincere apology to ajor Mair and M Seavancke for publishing the article in question. It was written and pnblished in the public interest, and in the belief that the statements therein contained were true, but fuller information has vinced them that in their desire to perform what they concei.od to be a public dnt.y they inflicted a serious and material injury upon tho. gentlemen named, and that the statements made in the article in question were absolutely untrue. They thorefore not only apologise but withdraw those statements and comments without reservation, and express their regret that they should have given publicity to them. The name of Major Jackson, of the Wakato, was also— ._ coupled with those of Major Mair and Mr Searancke, and the proprietors of the Herald wish this retractation and apology to bo understood as applying to him also. The Herald proprietors also desire to thank Messrs Bulier and Lewis, and their own solicitor, Mr Bainsbury, for their friendly office in arranging an amicable settlement to the action raised.
